PTSD, also known as post traumatic stress disorder. A disease that develops following an extremely traumatic event. After any type of traumatic event it is normal for anyone to feel scared, disconnected, or even numb; as time goes on these feelings will decrease for the average person. However, those with PTSD will have these feelings continuously. Luckily, with all the technology and medication we have now a days there are many treatments.
The most effective treatments include prolonged- exposure therapy, stress inoculation training, and other forms of cognitive therapy. Prolonged exposure therapy is designed to guide the client to recall traumatic experiences so that they can eventually gain control of their thoughts. Stress inoculation training teaches the client techniques to manage and reduce stress and anxiety. It is amazing how far we have come with medication and therapy.
