Abu Ghraib was a prison in Iraq, operated by the US from 2003-2006. In it were held suspected enemies of America. The United States soldiers who acted as guards in the prison were convicted in this period of time for charges that included direliction of duty, assault, indecency, abuse of detainees, and conspiracy to abuse detainees.
The things that happened to the prisoners were horrendous. They were stripped naked and beaten, electrocuted, attacked by dogs, and deprived of sleep, among other things.
My question is: how can we, the United States, expect other countries to treat our soldiers, their prisoners, humanely? We caused the deaths of thousands because a journalist was killed, but systematically abuse, torture, and terrify people in Guatanamo Bay at the same time. We expect of others what we cannot do ourselves. We wonder why we are hated, but we cannot seem to end our own system of hatred.
The pictures that follow document abuses committed by American soldiers on prisoners who were never tried or convicted of any crimes. They are extremely graphic and disturbing.
