Die Welle (The Wave)

In class I believe we briefly discussed Hitler in Germany and the guilt that German people are raised with today due to the horrible things that occurred in Nazi Germany. Many younger people, not only in Germany, feel that today dictatorships could not rise up again and often dread learning about this period in history because they claim it to be redundant. I disagree with this statement because history has shown to repeat itself if people are not properly educated.

I recently watched a movie called Die Welle (The Wave) that shows the importance of this topic. It is about a teacher in Germany who is assigned to teach his students about Autocracy during project week. He asks them all in the beginning of the week if they feel an autocracy could rise again to which they all respond no, but their answers may change at the end of the movie. The events may be a bit fast for the timeline of the movie, but it does effectively convey its point. I as well feel the fact that it was made by German filmmakers gives it an interesting point of view. I would recommend you watch it on Netflix. It is in German so you will need captions on.(That is unless you fluently speak German.)
