Ptsd is defined as a mental health condition thats triggered by a terrifying event- either witnessing or experiencing it. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. The onset of these symptoms usually occurs 1-3 months after experiencing a traumatic event. The war in vietnam ultimately led to the first diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder. The wars in afghanistan and iraq are the longest combat operations since the vietnam war. Out of 2.8 million, 20 percent of iraq war veterans were diagnosed, which is lower than the 30.2 percent of vietnam war vets. A high percentage of war veterans commit suicide to escape the reoccurring nightmare, this is their way to "escape" the anxiety, nightmares and uncontrollable flashbacks of what they experienced during the war.
