While watching the film Apocalypse Now in class, Ms. Cassidy asked us why we think the soldiers throughout the war were so paranoid. The only answer I have to this question is that there have been many random killings by regular Vietnamese citizens throughout the war. There was one example of these killings towards the beginning of the film. There was a helicopter which just loaded on an injured soldier and the helicopter exploded caused by a woman who just walked right up and threw a grenade on board.
Later in the movie, there was a woman on the boat next to Captain Willard and his men were telling the Vietnamese to stay still. The woman rushed towards the cabin and one of the soldiers shot her. Some of the class was confused why they wouldn't even give her a warning, but these men have been getting attacked when they least expected it throughout the entire war. When overseas, the only people you can completely trust are your brothers next to you fighting for the same cause that you are, freedom.
