The first identified case of the Ebola virus was in 1976. NINETEEN SEVENTY SIX. It's been going on and infecting people in Africa countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea for over 30 years, yet everyone in America seems to become concerned now that it's affecting us. Thousands have been dying in Africa and we only care now. Americans are in a state of panic and treating this like a joke on social media such as Twitter and Facebook, but it's really a huge issue. People don't know all the facts and therefor don't care as much since it's not affecting them directly.
I'm not attacking anyone on this though, because I too have had this "out of sight, out of mind" endeavor. I was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes this past year, but before that, I didn't know the first thing about it. Not until it affected me and my family personally did I really start to care about this disease. I didn't realize how many people were affected by it or what it really even was. This is similar to Ebola because no one really understands how serious it is until it affects them or someone in their life directly. It's a horrible disease and we should be doing everything in our power to protect as many people as possible from it and to help those who have already contracted the illness.
